Working Smoke Alarms Help Save Lives - Don't Stay Home Without Them!!
Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue

Free Smoke Alarms Available for Installation

Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue installs free 10-year lithium battery smoke alarms in the homes of low-income families where either young children or seniors live.

During the installation, fire department personnel offer fire prevention tips and help homeowners and residents with fire escape plans. Prevention is the best way to keep your home and your family safe from fire.

Central Kitsap is one of the Washington State communities receiving smoke alarms through a grant project funded by the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Washington State Department of Health. The smoke alarm installation project is intended to prevent fire-related injuries and deaths through distribution and installation of smoke alarms in homes that do not have adequate smoke alarm coverage.

What is adequate coverage? At a minimum, residences need a working smoke alarm on every level of the home. Most smoke alarm types sold in the U.S. are ionization alarms. These alarms are best at detecting fires that burn hot and fast. There are also photoelectric alarms available on the market. These alarms are best at alerting in the event of a slow, smoldering fire. For maximum protection, firefighters recommend installing both ionization and photoelectric alarms or duel sensing alarms in your home. Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue also recommends that residents follow the current Washington State Uniform Building Code by installing a smoke alarm in every area where people sleep.

A working smoke alarm and practiced fire escape plan significantly reduces the risk of death or injury in fire. Smoke alarms provide early notification to the occupants that a fire is present. Deadly fires can strike at anytime of the day or night.

Follow these fire safety tips to ensure your smoke alarms are functioning:

  • Test smoke alarms on a monthly basis.
  • Replace smoke alarm batteries once a year. Pick a date that is easy to remember, such as the day you change the clocks to coincide with Daylight Saving time.
  • Vacuum and/or dust smoke alarms at least once each year. Smoke alarms are like your nose, they cannot work properly if they are plugged and clogged with dust particles.
  • Replace smoke alarms every ten years.
  • Install ten-year lithium battery operated smoke alarms when you change out your alarms.
