Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue

Fire in the Hands of Kids Destroys

Children play with fire for a variety of reasons, ranging from curiosity to attention seeking. Most children lack an understanding of the destructive nature of fire and the tragic consequences of an uncontrolled fire.

That's why Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue has taken the lead on pulling together a multi-disciplinary team with representatives from all six Kitsap fire departments and the Navy, law enforcement, juvenile justice, mental health, DSHS, schools and the insurance industry.

The program, known as Kitsap Fire Stoppers, Children's Fire Prevention Program takes an educational approach in addressing and putting a stop to fire setting activity. There is no charge for our service and all information is strictly confidential. We are not counselors, but have been trained to provide the proper course of action after evaluation of the child's situation. Our evaluation determines whether the child's involvement in fire can be addressed with additional fire safety education or whether the situation calls for professional counseling. At least one parent/guardian must participate in the program with the child.

What can you do as a parent and caregiver to protect your child? Teach your child that fire is a tool for heating and cooking, not a toy. Control access to fire by keeping matches and lighters out of sight and securely out of reach of children. Model fire safe behavior, kids learn by watching. Teach children to tell you about any matches or lighters they find.

If you know a child who is involved in fire setting behaviors, contact Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue, 360.447.3550 or your local fire department. With your help we can protect children and families from fire's fury.
