Congratulations to all the students and families who participated in the 2007 countywide Fire Prevention Week, Fire Escape Planning Contest! All participants are winners at working to keep safe from fire in the home. Fire safety is no easy job! It takes effort on the part of every member of a home, from the youngest to the eldest.
Every student in the Central Kitsap area who returned a completed plan received a pencil and a ruler. In addition, the classroom at each elementary school with the highest percentage of returned fire escape plans won an ice cream sundae party hosted by CKFR firefighters! As you can see from the photos, everyone had a great time.
Why did the Kitsap County Professional Fire Fighters, Local 2819 invest their own resources in this effort? Because firefighters know that the best way to save lives in the event of a fire is to ensure that families have the early warning provided by working smoke alarms in conjunction with a practiced fire escape plan.
Winning classes who enjoyed ice cream with firefighters are:
- Ms. Hegtvedt's 2nd grade class at Brownsville Elementary,
- Ms. Costello's 2nd grade class at Clear Creek Elementary,
- Ms. Sudbeck's 1st grade class at Cottonwood Elementary,
- Ms. Allen's 1st grade class at Cottonwood Elementary,
- Mr. Callahan's PM Kindergarten at Emerald Heights Elementary,
- Ms. Klabo's 5th grade class at Esquire Hills Elementary,
- Ms. Madamba's 5th grade class at Esquire Hills Elementary,
- Ms. Jaquay's 6th grade class at Green Mountain Elementary,
- Ms. Kuske's 1st grade class at King's West School,
- Ms. Smith's Kindergarten class at PineCrest Elementary
- Ms. Cole's Kindergarten class at Silverdale Elementary,
- Ms. Lackman's 1st grade class at Silverdale Elementary,
- Ms. Elvik's 3rd grade class at Silverdale Elementary,
- Ms. Tate-Phillips AM Kindergarten class at Silver Ridge Elementary, and
- Ms. Polley's 2nd grade class at Woodlands Elementary.
Remember, a good fire escape plan is as easy are one, two, three!
- One family meeting place outside the home;
- Two ways out of each room;
- Three: Practice, practice, practice. Practice your plan at least three times a year.
It is so important to have working smoke alarms on every level of the home and in every sleeping area to ensure early warning. Practice is the key to knowing how your family will react when the smoke alarms sound in the middle of the night. For more information about fire escape planning, contact CKFR at 360.447.3550.
