We've Noticed Something Rotten

That's right. During residential fire inspections CKFR fire inspectors are finding that residents are storing large propane canisters in basements, closets, and stockrooms. This is an extremely dangerous practice! Propane cylinders must be stored outdoors or in a detached, unoccupied shed or garage.

While propane is a relatively inexpensive and safe energy source when used properly it is also highly flammable and can easily be ignited by sparks and other heat sources. As a safety precaution, gas distributors are required to add a product that emits an odor similar to rotten eggs or boiled cabbage so that users are able to smell a gas leak.

CKFR fire inspectors remind you that propane barbecues are designed for outdoor use only! The use of your barbecue in a camper, a garage, or in any enclosed space can lead to the accumulation of carbon monoxide, a harmful gas that can be deadly.

Barbeque safely this winter...Keep it outdoors!
