Pull to the Right
You're Driving Down the Road and Hear a Siren... What Should You Do?

By Paul Stewart, CKFR Division Training Chief

It has happened to all of us - you are driving down the road and from out of nowhere an ambulance, fire truck or police car appears in your rearview mirror with lights flashing and sirens blaring. There's no need to panic, just stay calm and do the RIGHT thing.

Washington State driving laws state that motorists must yield the right of way to emergency vehicles. Yielding the right of way simply means pulling over to the RIGHT as far as safely possible and come to a controlled and safe stop or, if traffic is heavy and you can't get to the RIGHT you may simply stop and let the emergency vehicles go around you.

Firefighters, paramedics and police officers receive extensive training to drive emergency vehicles in difficult and urgent conditions. As long as cars do not move or swerve in front of them they simply drive around the traffic and proceed to their destination.

Sometimes that is easier said then done with today's congested roads. But simple driving courtesy will allow us to get to the emergency quickly and get you back on your way as soon as possible. Remember, some day you or a loved one may need emergency services so help us get there quickly and safely.

Here are some tips on not getting surprised while driving:

  • Always drive defensively and be aware of possible problems and conditions around you.
  • Scan your mirrors so you know who's behind you.
  • Keep your radio volume down. Loud music can mask the sound of an emergency siren.
