POSITION DESCRIPTION
CAREER FIREFIGHTER/EMT

NATURE OF WORK
This position requires a versatile team member capable of performing multiple tasks in potentially dangerous environments, and serves as the first line emergency responder to fire and medical emergencies. The Career Firefighter/ EMT must possess attributes such as judgment, agility, coordination, and intelligence as necessary tools to operate as a team member in a wide variety of situations, both in emergency and non-emergency conditions. Communications skills with patients, supervisors, public and fellow team members are vital for the success of this position. This person often serves as the public's first point of contact, and the District is highly dependent on this member's ability to present a favorable and professional image.

Shift Lieutenant

SUPERVISION RESPONSIBILITIES
The Career Firefighter/EMT may act in a supervisory role as needed, or assigned. Shall assume supervision over subordinate personnel in a like assigned position. May act in an emergency scene supervisory role as needed.

JOB DIMENSIONS

1. Learns and maintains awareness with District goals, policies, standard operating procedures, chain of command, daily operations and routines. Completes assignments within established timelines.
2. Learns and maintains awareness with Kitsap County EMT protocols and procedures.
3. Maintains Washington State and District required Firefighter training levels.
4. Possesses the knowledge, skill, and ability to care for patients suffering from a wide variety of illness or injuries.
5. Possesses the knowledge, skills and ability to perform rescues from a variety of incidents, including fire buildings; vehicular accidents; and other sorts of rescue situations.
6. Demonstrates the ability to confront multiple emergency situations, and to utilize resources in a safe, efficient and productive manner to extinguish fire and save life and property.
7. Demonstrates the ability to act with, or without, direct supervision.
8. Provides patient care and transportation as needed.
9. Prepares accurate reports and/or records as required; files, and/or forwards them accordingly.
10. Checks, tests, and maintains District apparatus and equipment in a response ready condition.
11. Provides general maintenance of assigned stations and grounds.
12. Participates in a team effort to advance the health and safety of the members and public served.
13. Participates in fire and medical prevention activities that, by example, will include fire inspections, pre-fire plans, public education, and CPR classes.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS (REQUIRED)

1. Maintains Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
2. Is physically fit and motivated to maintain that condition.
3. Demonstrates strong people skills, is self-motivated, and is capable of advancing the goals of the District while contributing to a positive, productive work environment.
4. Possesses, obtains, and maintains certifications that may be required by the District or higher authority.
5. Possesses the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
6. Possesses and maintains a valid Washington State driver's license.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS (PREFERRED)

1. Has an AA degree in Fire Science or equivalent.
2. Has a working knowledge of computers.
